What determines the amount of MB in E-Mail?

Sending photos to my brother via E-Mail and Yahoo shows some are 6.1 MB, some 5.7 MB, 5.6 MB etc. Yet on all photos I'm sending my camera settings didn't change one iota as far as megapixels, file size. What I do change is focal length and apertures. Any ideas?
